Surrounding areas that also get their water from Lake Erie are also effected. Do not consume, cook, or brush your teeth with this water. It is also not safe to give to pets.
DO NOT BOIL YOUR WATER. BOILING WATER ACTUALLY MAKES THE TOXINS WORSE INSTEAD OF GETTING RID OF THEM.
The current levels still make showering and bathing safe for a normal, healthy adult, but it’s advised that you shouldn’t do any laundry until the all clear is given.
What is a microcystin?
Algal blooms, often caused by the addition of nutrients to a water body, are made up of cyanobacteria, commonly called blue-green algae. Some cyanobacteria can produce toxins, called cyanotoxins. Although many blooms contain non-toxic species of cyanobacteria, lab tests are needed to determine whether a bloom is toxic or nontoxic. Some cyanotoxins can be toxic for humans, animals and plants. The health effects include nausea, vomiting, fever, rashes, and eye and ear irritation.
Most stores in the area at this point are out of bottled water but there is a list of places that will be offering drinkable, safe water for free over the course of the day.
Currently two samples of the water that tests positive are being sent to Cincinnati for further testing by the EPA. It will probably be hours before any more information is available on the status of those samples.
PLEASE BE SAFE. DO NOT COOK WITH THIS WATER. DO NOT DRINK IT. DO NOT GIVE IT TO PETS.
Please stay safe.
We’re now being told that it is safe to do laundry, but it is still unsafe to cook with, brush your teeth with, or just generally drink the water. It’s also probably not a good idea to wash any dishes with the water. There are still places offering generally cheap or even free drinkable water listed in the link above, but most places need you to bring your own container so please be aware of that.
Stay safe, be careful, and hopefully we can get past this.
